Professionalisation logistic services

CONTEXT

A fast-growing wholesaler in electricals, operating their own logistic organisation. Logistics is seen as a key in differentiating customer service, so the company has their own warehouses and transport fleet. They also operate several branches throughout the Netherlands to service local customers and support the logistics network.

The ambition is to operate their logistics organisation as an independent logistics service provider offering their services also to third parties. The objective of the project was to analyse the current activities and deliver a development program aimed at professionalising the logistics organisation to be able to market its services and compete with logistic service providers.

SCOPE

The project included analysing the strategy, organisation (structure and culture), processes, resources, tools and results. It also included assessments of the management. Besides the analysis a 3-year development program had to be delivered and presented for the owner and the management team.

APPROACH

  • Interviews with most important stakeholders outside logistics organisation.
  • Interviews with management and key players within logistics organisation.
  • Review of operational processes.
  • Analysis of operational and financial management information and results.
  • Review of logistic contracts.

Results

  • Analysis with strong points and (32) points to be developed.
  • 24 project plans to be kicked off in the first year.
  • Implemented activity-based costing model.
  • Standard logistic services contract and service level agreement.
  • Proposal of new management information reporting, incl. changes in the accounting ledger.
  • Implementation of new organisational structure.
